Professional Practice in Film Education

This course is aimed at those with experience in teaching moving image education, and/or teachers with experience or interest in using film in the classroom. It is a co-created course, which aims to pool the shared knowledge of this group of students to offer a reflective space to think about the pedagogy and practice of of film education, and develop a coherent, base level of professional standards for film education practice in Scotland.

The course is supported by Screen Scotland and developed in dialogue with key stakeholders in the area of film education. It is an SCQF level 11 Masters-level module with 20 credits attached, allowing students to use those credits to pursue further study at Master’s level if so desired.

Film, and moving image more broadly, is increasingly seen as one of the primary vehicles through which young people can express themselves. Additionally, skills gaps have been consistently identified within the Scottish screen industries, amidst general calls to more concretely embed film and moving image practice within the lives of young people. This course provides students with an opportunity to consolidate existing knowledge, develop new skills, research and discuss professional practice and reflect upon what the core elements of a world-leading film education framework might look like.

About the course

The Professional Practice in Film Education course encourages participants to situate their current and historic working practices within contexts of educational research and research in film studies.

The course will build awareness of the history and development of film education and introduce students to some of the key theories informing current practice.

Participants will take a collaborative approach to the generation of knowledge across the cohort of students taking this course, through online discussions, webinars and,

hopefully, face-to-face sessions which will be held at QMU and other relevant venues.

This course is designed to formulate a framework for film education practice in Scotland, around the core knowledge, skills and understanding required to facilitate film education learning in formal and non-formal education settings.

Students are required to design and deliver a film education workshop with peers and reflect upon that workshop in either a spoken (30 minute Viva) or written form (2000 words). The aim of the assignment is to consolidate and reflect upon your learning throughout the course.

There are no formal entry requirements. Applicants will be asked to provide a supporting statement, list of qualifications and document relevant professional experience.

  • 3 months, with bi-weekly online seminars.

Location/Attendance: Online and at QMU and other relevant venues. Face-to-face sessions will be on Saturdays, one in each of April, May and June

Fee Waiver: There are a number of fee-waiver bursaries and additional grant support places available, provided by Screen Scotland.
